I wonder what this preoccupation with change is all about. Almost everyone talks about Change! Change is what we need, change is what we seek. Change is the way to be and so on and so forth. At a recently concluded corporate training session, the message was – Let us be the harbingers of change! Even earlier, corporate meetings and sessions were centered around change. Renaissance was the theme of one such session long ago. Obama says that he and Biden can bring about the change America needs. At the same time McCain says he can Change what Bush has done. Suddenly ‘Who moved my cheese’ is selling like hot cakes all over again. And come to think of it, change has pretty much been happening all around, all the time. Just that it has never been so ostentatiously publicized! Look at the flipside. Person A is feted day in and day out and his methods are lauded at all time. His term almost comes to an end and there is a change in leadership or a diversification venture or some such event, and suddenly change becomes the need of the hour. What does that mean? All of a sudden, everything that person A had done till then becomes null and void. All of a sudden, all his methods become wrong and need to be replaced. Any modicum of disapproval of the current trend gets to be branded as a ‘resistance to change’. All of a sudden laziness or sloppy worker become lesser denigrating epithets when compared to ‘resistance to change’.

Do I sound like one of the bottom feeders who needs to be given the dreaded epithet? If I do, then I guess I have been too forceful about a subject I actually believe in.
